American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course

Prerequisite Skills: Swim 300 meters continuously demonstrating breath control & rhythmic breathing.  Candidates may swim freestyle, 
breaststroke or a combination of both.  There is no time limit for this skill.  Tread water for two minutes, only using legs.  Swim 20 meters using freestyle or breaststroke; surface dive to a minimum of seven feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick and return to the surface; swim back to the starting point and get out of the water without using the ladder.  When returning to the starting point, candidate must hold the brick with both hands while swimming on their back.  This skill must be accomplished with their face out of the water, without goggles, and a time limit of one minute and 40 seconds.


Certification: $200 military patrons 
(Active Duty personnel, Retirees, Reservists, eligible family members, and DoD civilians) Includes book, certifications (Lifeguard with CPR/AED and First Aid), & pocket mask

Payment: Credit card only.  Payment is due prior to the first day of class.


Participants must be 15 years old by the end of class to participate.  Registration will be taken at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center front desk beginning Monday, September 13.
